Before I get to answer this question because most of the time it’s a rollercoaster ride for people to understand. Fine Art photography is firstly and most importantly about the artist and what the capture. The camera a photographer uses is merely a tool they use to capture a moment or to create art. An example is the work of the Atlanta based photographer itsthreesixty. He does many different types of photography like portraits and landscape but fine art photography is what he does the most. He has a look and style to his photos that can only be captured by him and no one else. While his work is rather different than any other photographer, he made it all work and made it his main source of income. A fine art photographer should always go beyond just capturing a scene or a subject.
Now to answer the main question…What is fine art photography? Fine-art photography is photography created in line with the vision of the photographer as artist, using photography as a medium for creative expression. The goal of fine-art photography is to express an idea, a message, or an emotion.
The main reason I as a young South African man choose to base some of my work on fine art photography is merely because I have not seen many young fine art photographers in South Africa. I’ve always been interested in the art of everything whether it’s a photograph, a film (movie) or even book itself. I strive to capture an idea/ an emotion that leaves people asking questions so I can further explain my craft as a fine art photographer.
